Hi! My name is Margarita Gutierrez. I am a Mexican-American artist from Sunny San Diego, California. As a daughter of immigrants living in the US I grew up with an “Americanized” version of Mexico. Although I visited my family in Mexico City every summer, I was never considered Mexican enough for them, nor was I american enough for home. Fortunately, I discovered one thing in my life that does not carry any barriers. Art and Nature.
I started learning the art of henna when I was only 16 years old. The beautiful colors Henna can produce was marveling. I soon made a commitment to only use natural and organic products.
My art, jewelry and goods are all inspired by, and created with leaves, flowers and other gifts from mother nature. I enjoy using with semi-precious stones and metals, experimenting with various mediums like clay, resin and acrylic. The most fulfilling part of all this though, is to see my work adorn and enhance the natural beauty in everybody!
My beautiful mother, an artist herself, taught me to make jewelry when I was going though some health issues. In 2015, I was diagnosed with Kidney Disease, and eventually started dialysis in 2018. A few months later, I developed a clot which required an emergency open heart surgery. I found myself in bed for a while, with nothing to do. It was a rough few months initially, and all I could do was watch television and listen to music. I needed to keep my hands busy, so my mother spent some time with me and taught me her craft. I continue to require dialysis treatments 3 times a week until I can find a kidney donor. This has given me time to learn and advance my craft .
Come check out the process on some of the pieces i have made and are possibly still for sale! Thank you for your support, you guys are amazing :)
